- Polystyrene hives are becoming more and more popular among beekeepers who love the superior insulation value that they offer. In northern climates, polystyrene hives have been known to overwinter better and build up 2-3 weeks sooner in the springtime than a wooden hive. A type of very dense, heavy duty styrofoam, this durable, lightweight material will last for years and look great doing it! When handled with reasonable care, polystyrene equipment can outlast wooden hive equipment. Give a polystyrene hive a try, you’ll be glad you did!
Our complete polystyrene hives include:
- Screened bottom board
- Entrance reducer
- Deep hive body
- 10 assembled wood frames with extra heavy beeswax coated foundation
- Plastic inner cover/propolis trap combo
- Ventilated outer cover
Everything in this kit is assembled, except for the hive box itself. It fits together very easily, and we recommend using a quality wood glue on the joints. We also recommend two coats of exterior latex paint on all exposed hive surfaces, just like wooden hives.
